In 2012, Atlas DIY developed the idea of ACCESS lawyering. The premise for Project ACCESS was the realization that the law had strayed too far from the hands and understanding of the individual. We saw that our clients and the immigrant community were aware of laws limiting their activities but knew very little about the laws and regulations put in place for their protection or that could further their life in the U.S. This created an opportunity for exploitation, and many of our clients had their rights abused in different areas of our life. Thus Project ACCESS came into being.

Project ACCESS stands for Achieving Client Comprehension, Enacting Social Success. The goals of Project ACCESS started as merely empowering immigrants by making them aware of their rights, but now these goals have transcended from just knowledge of rights to application of immigrant rights. Our legal clients are actively taught the law and encouraged to create youth-friendly materials to apply and share their new-found knowledge. These projects - including narratives, videos and artwork - have been showcased on the Atlas DIY YouTube page and have received over 75,000 hits from across the country! Below are some of the stories our clients wanted to share with the larger Atlas DIY community:

Project ACCESS!

Meet Carlos - Artist & DREAMer

In this article (and corresponding video) Carlos, a formerly undocumented youth turned recent Deferred Action recipient, talks about his passions, his aspirations, and what Deferred Action means to him.

Project ACCESS - Gloria

Gloria writes in this submission about her initial fears when President Obama first announced his Deferred Action initiative and why she believes Deferred Action (while "not a permanent fix") is a step in the right direction.

Project ACCESS- Matilde

Matilde was a participant of Atlas: DIY's ACCESS program in 2012 and was kind enough to send us some art submissions on her representations of subjects ranging from the DREAM Act to Deferred Action.

Meet Julia

Julia was a participant of Atlas DIY's Project ACCESS back in 2012. She applied for Deferred Action in September and has been accepted! Check out her amazing ACCESS Project and her...

Meet Tiffany - CUFL

Tiffany is a CUFL - she is a Currently Undocumented Future Lawyer.

Project ACCESS - Isabel

Isabel's narrative is a true raw insight into the emotion and uncertainty young immigrants faced when Deferred Action (DACA) was first introduced. Isabel talks about overcoming those initial fears in hopes for a brighter future.

Project ACCESS Poster Submissions

We received two poster submissions from a client of ours, in which they attempted to brand Project ACCESS in a creative way. Check out the posters they sent us!

Project ACCESS - Yessica

This poster is, without a doubt, one of the most impressive we have been sent! Yessica has done an amazing job at organizing key questions that answer the overall theme "How do I know if I'm eligible for Deferred Action?" Check it out!
